Entertainment is constantly evolving, thanks to changes in technology. Today, watching movies doesn't always mean a trip to the local movie theater. Video stores are long gone, but you still have the option to rent movies and watch them at home. It's a convenient process with Apple TV. Apple iTunes has a wealth of TV shows and movies available for rent in addition to purchase. In fact, some movies are released in theaters and iTunes at the same time to increase the reach. Here's how to rent movies using your Apple TV.

Check for Compatibility

As a first step, check to see if your device is compatible with the latest movie app. The first and second generation models don't have access to the movies app. The third generation Apple TV stopped being eligible for updates in December 2016. Unfortunately, if you have one of these models, you won't be able to rent through your Apple TV. To check your model, go to "Settings >About."

Open the App

If your Apple TV can access the iTunes Store and is compatible, open your Apple TV and navigate to the Movies app. When you click on this app, you get a list of movies available on iTunes. Movies are available in many world languages. If you're looking for a specific movie, search for the title in the iTunes Store to see if it's available.

Select the Movie

Browse the iTunes Store or search for a specific title. For example, searching for "Thor" shows you all the available movies with Thor in the title or with Thor as a character. Once you select a title, look for the "Rent and Watch Now" option. Click it to start streaming to your Apple TV. You can also choose "Rent and Watch Later" to save the movie for easy access for the next 30 days. Regardless of the option you choose, you can't download rentals to your Apple TV. You can only stream them live.

Troubleshoot Issues

If you encounter any problems, first check your Wifi signal. Open the settings and navigate to "Network" to see the strength of your signal. Move the Apple TV box around if necessary to get a better signal. Otherwise, try restarting your Apple TV to flush out the cache for a fresh start.

Switch to Other Apple Devices

Movies you rent are associated with your Apple ID, which allows you to watch them on other Apple devices. However, you can't watch on two devices at the same time. The iTunes Store has tons of titles available, and the process for watching is quick and easy.
